Project Title: Kent and Medway Brain Health Clinic: A pilot study of streamlined dementia assessment using blood biomarkers, low-field MRI and electronic cognitive testing The University of Kent and Hyperfine
The Kent and Medway Brain Health Clinic (KMBHC) pilot will test an innovative approach to dementia diagnosis that combines cutting-edge technologies to provide faster, more accessible assessments. Current memory clinic assessments often require multiple appointments and lengthy waiting times. The KMBHC model integrates three emerging technologies: blood-based biomarker testing (pTau217) that can identify Alzheimer’s disease pathology without invasive procedures; low-field MRI scanning that provides portable, accessible brain imaging; and computerised cognitive testing that standardises assessments whilst reducing clinician time requirements.
Twenty-five participants who have completed standard memory clinic assessments will undergo additional KMBHC evaluation. A panel of memory clinic specialists will independently review these results to determine diagnostic accuracy and clinical utility compared to traditional approaches. The study will evaluate feasibility, acceptability, and potential for integration into NHS memory services.
This pilot addresses critical NHS pressures by testing a scalable model that could reduce waiting times, improve diagnostic accuracy, and enhance accessibility for underserved populations. The project builds on successful international models whilst addressing their limitations through portable technologies and reduced staffing requirements. Results will inform a larger research programme to establish brain health clinics as mainstream NHS provision, supporting national ambitions to improve dementia diagnosis and reduce healthcare inequalities.
